Ronny Chieng is a comedian best known for his work on Comedy Central's The Daily Show and, more recently, for his appearances in the award-winning film Crazy Rich Asians and Marvel’s Shang-Chi. In 2019, he also published his debut stand-up comedy special on Netflix's Asian Comedian Destroys America!, which explores the ups and downs of modern American life.

His humor breaks down the absurdity of human behavior by cutting through layers of ethnicity and class, revealing the downright ridiculous aspects of life through his comedic material. “It’s easy to joke about how Americans have gotten fat, lazy, or stupid due to our excesses. Chieng’s observations go deeper, though, highlighting how abundance has led to absurd waste and even more absurd expectations,” Decider shares.

In an interview with Esquire, he shares more about his different approaches when switching between actor and comedian. “Stand-up comedy is a very direct form of self-expression. It's very me-focused. I know what to say and how to say it because it's coming from me… When you're acting, you're doing someone else's project. It's much more of a team sport. So, I defer more to the creators and the directors. And also, I'm very much out of my comfort zone,” he explains.
